There aren't too many originals in this world. Fred Van Dyke was one of them. Back when surfers were individuals and rode giant waves and ripped on big wooden boards and carried cases of beer from the market for exercise instead of running underwater with rocks. To one of the great pioneers and waterman. RIP Fred, you will be missed

I want to give The Electric Sunshine full credit for this gem of a bit, they have been known to have some killer goods and bits over at theelectricsunshine.blogspot.com
Kooks now invade rocky waves, rip off the better surfers & locals, & suffer no damage...
Goon cords are a crutch, a mother, a blanket of security to make up for lack of ability...
I invested in a knife & now cut goons' cords off.
Maybe if enough cords are cut, challenge will become a part of surfing again."

Hey folks, I must apologize to jump the gun, but here at the leash ruined surfing we don't feel the need to be singular in any way shape, or form. Instagram is great, and for those who say blogging is dead, well, we don't care. We figure both can go hand in hand....
Here's a little 'spin the globe' for ya to get your weekend started off...

Hey folks, it comes with some regret that this Leash Ruined Surfing blog will cease to exist. Its not going anywhere there just wont be anything new from here on out.
That being said, my arm has been twisted not too lightly to get with the times (something I struggle with) so I'm acclimating myself with Instagram, so I'm hoping a few of you out there will follow on there, as it is more functional for all....

Dave Parmenter has been an important figure in the surf world for a very long time. He's one of those people that when you hear him speak or read his writing, its usually worth paying attention to. Especially his thoughts on Stand Up Paddling...
It started as a Polynesian thing, Makaha iOS and self-policing on where and when you did it. For me the attraction was solely about getting away from surfing a conventional surf spot. …But after a few years of being a craze it just got away from us and became something else. The dorks commandeered it. It was the same with the leash, same with the modern longboard – where misuse of a tool inflicts yet another plague on the beleaguered surfing population. It’s actually worse than the abuses possible with a longboard because out-of-control SUP boards are far more dangerous. It’s always the same old thing, assholes who don’t know their place. Charles Lindbergh was the pioneer and champion of aviation as a force to bring Mankind together, but he wound up turning his back on it later in life and becoming something of an environmentalist. I just always knew that one day it would be like that, after barnstorming this new sport around the world, but one day forced to turn my back on it in the same way that he did against aviation because it had been used against mankind instead of for it. There are many SUPers out there who have inflicted their own Guernica upon the civilian surfing population

Well folks, if you are, like myself and my close mates, somewhere on the Eastern Pacific Rim I don't need to tell you about the happenings of the past few weeks. It was to say the least a hell of a way to ring in the new year. One of my good friends here on the South Coast told me that if someone woke up from a coma and was put in Coastal Southern California they wouldn't be able to tell you what month it is. Very true statement that was, one I had never heard or thought before.
I wore my cord a handful of times in the past two weeks. In my area I like the chance to wear a cord because it means that you get to ride spots that are rather rare. At a couple of those spots dings even occur while wearing a leash. Sometimes a few day flat spell is necessary to repair both board and body.
The first whale sightings on their southern winter migration happened in the channel a couple of days ago headed for points South that I'm envious of. In the meantime I heard them whisper out in between blows that a run of The Leash Ruined Surfing t-shirts and hats and even more stickers are on their way. Ill keep an ear out between the sets for more on that. Until next time stay footloose and leash free...
